East London is the largest city of the Buffalo City metropole, which comprises King William's Town, Bisho, Mdantsane and East London. The city lies on the banks of the Buffalo River and features South Africa's largest river port. East London is home to a thriving luxury automotive manufacturing industry, while its port is used for the export of cars, pineapples and other fruit. The living fossile, the Coelecanth, which was believed to have been extinct, was discovered in the 1930s off the coast of East London.
