Founded on a bend of the Buffalo Bayou, Houston has grown to become the largest city in the state and the fourth largest city in the United States. What was once swamp land has given way to a sprawling city with a Texas-sized skyline. A lack of zoning laws has allowed major skyscrapers to be built all over the city. In fact, Houston claims the tallest building in the United States outside a major downtown, the 901-foot Williams Tower in the Galleria District. To the east of Houston is the tallest monument in the U.S., the San Jacinto Monument in La Porte. While the center city is situated inland, Houston features a major port and is not far from the historic seaside town of Galveston. Attractions include world-class arts, professional sports, and multi-cultural dining. One of the city's claims to fame is NASA's Johnson Space Center, which commanded the moon missions.
