Downers Grove is a large suburb in the middle of DuPage County, located just southeast of the Morton Arboretum. It is mainly a bedroom community, although it includes several important commercial districts including the Interstate 88 corridor and a historic downtown.
The village has the world's largest concentration of Sears Catalog Homes: more than 100 prefabricated houses which families ordered from stock plans by mail through Sears Roebuck & Co. between 1908 and 1940. Most of them are located around Forest Avenue.
Downers Grove was founded by Pierce Downer from Vermont in 1832. During the Civil War it became a transfer point for runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad.
