A small town in eastern Minnesota's Pine County, midway between the Twin Cities and Duluth. Growth was rapid after 1869 with the arrival of the railroad and plentiful pine forests for the timber industry. The town and 400 square miles of forest were completely destroyed on September 1, 1894 from a massive firestorm generated by intense heat and drought.
